Custom made insoles
Last updated: November 11th, 2024
Custom-made insoles, also known as orthotics, are shoe inserts customised to the individual's foot shape and biomechanics.
Their aim is to provide support, stability, and reduce discomfort or pain. Custom-made insoles are usually prescribed by podiatrists, who specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle disorders.
Podiatrists may prescribe custom-made insoles for a variety of reasons, including:
Foot Pain: Individuals experiencing foot pain, whether it's related to conditions like plantar fasciitis, arthritis, or general discomfort, may benefit from custom insoles that provide targeted support and cushioning.
Biomechanical Issues: People with irregular foot mechanics, such as overpronation (rolling the foot inward) or supination (rolling the foot outward), may be prescribed custom insoles to help correct these imbalances and improve gait.
Foot Deformities: Individuals with foot deformities like bunions, hammertoes, or flat feet may benefit from custom-made insoles that provide tailored support and help reduce pressure on affected areas.
Sports Injuries: Athletes, especially those involved in high-impact sports, may receive custom insoles to address biomechanical issues, enhance performance, and reduce the risk of injuries.
Diabetic Foot Care: People with diabetes are prone to foot complications, and custom-made insoles can help prevent or manage issues such as diabetic neuropathy and ulcers.
Paediatric Foot Issues: Children with foot-related concerns, such as flat feet or gait abnormalities, may be prescribed custom insoles to support healthy foot development.
To prescribe custom made insoles, the podiatrist may:
- conduct a thorough examination of the patient's feet, including a foot scan
- conduct gait analysis, and
- consideration of their medical history.
The insoles are then crafted based on these individual factors.
It's important to note that over-the-counter insoles are also available for general use. But they are not customised to an individual's specific foot structure and needs. Custom-made insoles offer a more personalised product for those with unique foot conditions or biomechanical issues.
