Speech Language Pathologists
Speech-language pathologists, also known as SLPs or speech therapists, apply their expertise in human communication to evaluate, diagnose and treat speech, language and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly.
Speech problems can include language and literacy problems, social communication, voice, and fluency, also known as stuttering. The SLP takes patients step-by-step toward their goal, such as helping them to use basic speech, improving their articulation, gaining better understanding or improving their conversation skills.
SLPs also work with patients who have issues with feeding or swallowing, also is known as dysphagia. If left untreated, this can cause issues that can lead to poor nutrition, weight loss, and other problems.
Speech-language pathologists may work as part of a team, which may include teachers (in the case of children), physicians, audiologists, psychologists and social workers.
When to see a Speech Language Pathologist
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you might need to see a speech language pathologist:
- Experiencing speech impediment problems
- Not understanding words and phrases
- Having issues swallowing
