Obstetricians & Gynaecologists
Obstetricians (OB) take care of pregnant women and babies whilst a gynaecologist (GYN) specialises in female reproductive health. There are also doctors that specialise in both who are referred to as an OB-GYN. OB-GYN doctors can also perform surgeries. It is common for gynaecologists not to be obstetricians, however, to be an obstetrician you have to be a gynaecologist first.
When to see an OB/GYN
When pregnant, women will generally have to see an obstetrician at least once a month. You should also see an OB if you’re suspecting or planning a pregnancy. Women should see a gynaecologist for a routine exam frequently depending on their age. This exam should include a pelvic and cervix inspection as well as a smear test. You should also see a gynaecologist if you have any of these symptoms:
- Haven’t had your period for two months or more
- Stomach pain and excess discharge with foul smell
- Heavy painful periods
- Irregular periods
Remember to always consult with your GP if you’re unsure or experiencing any issues.
