Dietitians help patients achieve better health through their diet. Unlike nutritionists, dietitians are also able to advise patients who need medical care where diet can form part of the treatment of an illness. Dietitians are able to interpret blood tests and draw up a diet plan based on the results to ensure an underlying cause is addressed through the following of a balanced diet.
When to see a dietitian If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you might need to see a dietician:
- You have food allergies or intolerance
- Want to lose weight
- Have digesting problems
- Have an eating disorder
- Abnormal blood test results
- Recovering after surgery or treatment
This is not an exhaustive list; you should always consult with your GP if you have any concerns about your health. Your GP may also refer you to a dietician if this is required as part of your treatment.
